Losing consciousness whilst cycling ?

Ok I did it, perhaps overdid it, but I don't know, this passed weekend I hit the trails after about four months of no cycling and I was fighting to stay conscious and actually did lose it at one point and crashed into a tree. Then again on the road going downhill my vision was fading and I was again fighting to stay focused.

Anyone any ideas ?

Maybe I overdid it, but I have now just taken delivery of a heart rate monitor so I don't overdo it with any luck.

If I were you I'd get properly checked out. Losing consciousness is rarely a great thing, but when travelling at speed it can be a lot worse. The only advice I can give is to see your doctor.

I would think that there are possibly several things to think about here.

1) Nutrition and hydration. Had you eaten enough during the day. Snacking power foods should help to fight feeling giddy, and falling over. Drinking is also essential. Dehdration can have a similar effect.

2) Spending time acclimitizing after a long lay off is essential to regain your former condition.

3) I don't know how old you are, but having a lay off can add to existing conditions, or allow conditions to develop unsuspected, or with other stresses, ie work. This many result in high blood pressure, poor circulation, or conditions which affect the O2 transfer from lungs to blood, to muscule.

4) Enviromental factors might also be considered. Were you hot all day? Were any clothes restrictive or tight? Have you stopped, or started any meds?

All of these should be considered, so take it easy for a while........

Ok, I had a blood pressure test quite recently and it was found to be very low, which is usual for me, it is my history and with that obvious poor circulation and always even in summer cold.

Meds I quit five months back, so they should be clear of the system by now, but my diet is what is called an Asian diet, plenty of rice and fish because it's cheap.

Now it is also usual with me that when I have the energy I go at it all guns blazing, but this is the first time this has happened, but I have the doc again in a week, so this incidence will be mentioned as hey, I 'm getting old, 44 this year.

Get a blood test.

I passed out a few years back (after necking three Guiness really fast) and turned out I had impaired liver function and raised cholesterol.

I only drink at the weekends now (instead of washing my dinner down with a bottle of beer and a glass of wine) and stepped up my porridge and blueberry game for the cholesterol.

All good now.

A blood test is coming soon, oddly for suspected chromosomal abnormalities, I will tell them to give me low down on it all.

It may seem odd, sometimes, what they look for in blood tests, but if you look a bit more into the background of how / why they test various things, it can make more sense.
