Longer Campag rear mech 8 speed

A mate has a nice bike that came fitted with a complete Record groupset. 8 speed inc Ergos. As expected the gearing was a touch high! First step was a triple chainset which gave nice ratios but the rear mech didn't really cope.
Unwisely, in m opinion, he took it to a reputable LBS who fitted Xenon mechs. Now we have the chain capacity but as far as I know they are not 8 speed and the shift isn't very good.
Any suggestions for an 8 speed Ergo compatible rear mech that copes with a triple. I reckon 9 speed stuff will cope, maybe a Comp triple mech?

Re:

only first gen (pre 2000) 9 speed stuff will index properly. Post 2000 9 speed will kinda work, but wont be smooth

Yes, unfortunately Campag changed the lever pull at end of year 2000 so you need a matched set of levers and rear derailleur, either both 2000 or before or both after 2000.
Why not look out for a Campag Racing Triple rear derailleur. Long cage, built to Record standard and looks the part.

That's odd as the Champ is the later (post 2001) cable pull yet the retailer says it will do 8 speed. Puzzling.

I use this model with an 8 speed set up {Rear & triple front}
