Of course there are people who take advantage of our system, but I'm still proud of the basic ethos that this country embraces...we contribute a little to help those in need.

Well said that man :D

i have mixed feelings about this
certianly some of the able bodied should be out there doing something for the community that supports them ,its got to start somewhere

the other side is that there is not a lot of jobs around ,well local to me anyway , and the ones that need doing seem to require a bucket load
of h&s training due to compensation culture

get them in the army ......

I tend to like that idea. 18 -21yrs but the quality of the British army could be damaged.

I understand the motivations of this plan: to reinstate an employment "mindset" & the routine of working into the long-term unemployed.

However, I think it's a pity that this plan didn't include some kind of training course; if a lack of core skills are holding some people back from getting a driving job or a customer service job, then picking up litter for 30 hours a week isn't going to give them those skills.

Suggesting slave labour is bad enough, creating a slave army is totally out of order. Why would we need one, do we have more plans for illegal wars and invasions? I would go to prison before I would be forced into the army. Not sure a 56yr old pacifist would be much use to the army anyway.

Until we have enough jobs to go round, demonising and penalising the unemployed is a punitive policy that will do nothing to reduce the overall numbers.

How can the quality be damaged, many of the recruits today are from commonwealth countries with lower educational standards than us and english in some cases is not their first language.

In times of high unemployment we should be recruiting more from the UK and less from abroad. Thus get them in the army and any other government institution with a recruitment shortfall such as the NHS.

I've been unemployed twice, both for short periods because rather than sign on I got any job going no matter how crap. I'm not saying anyone else is lazy its just I'd go mad without the structure of work, no matter how menial.

Worst job to date, frying chips all day at speed in a bingo hall on split shifts with a clientelle of mean spirited gambling obsessed grannies

In my town you can walk through our market place every morning and see the same few people who have been living off benefits for donkeys years all standing round the tea stall talking about the x factor while laughing their heads off.
Round their feet blow rubbish galore, and there is chewing gum all over the floor and graffiti in places.
If these people are fit enough to be up at seven am then they are fit enough to clear up the mess around them,it would be taking no ones job as it often stays like it for a couple of days
Is it unreasonable to expect these people to give something in return :?:
Most of them have not worked in 15 years and their tax input has run out I reckon.
I have worked continuously and never signed on,but the one time I actually needed help I was told I was unintitled :x

The system is rubbish,period.

Because people who are forced to join tend not to want to fight and tend to just give and run or put their hands up.

a volunteer army are better motivated. Look at the Falklands

You have a valid point there tintin, but national service would be no bad thing if it taught respect and discipline etc.
