anyone know what this bit is called/where i can get one/what can i use as an equivalent if its not readily available??

Shimano call it a "plate stopper pin". My guess was "cage stop screw".

It's not listed as a spare part for your mech except as part of the outer cage assembly:

but I think it's a fair bet that Shimano use the same M4 thread on all their cage assemblies, and your local bike shop is sure to have a mangled mech you can cannibalize.

I've got to give it a shot! Looks about right but I've no idea how consistent Shimano are with their sizing of these parts across the models/years etc....
