Ah, right 8) , so that's how it's done :D

A mate has a rodded 50's Chevy Truck with a Mustang II front clip, that really is on the deck with no air, just springs, says he manages fine, dont know how he does it

Nooooo! Air ride is cheating. If you go low you should put up with the down sides!

Downsides! You mean desroying the car and probably killing me and any passengers in the car. The front valance touches the ground!! I thought you liked me? :D

I can roll a car slammed but on the floor is a little dificult, even for me.

As for buying a DS, what's the fun in that? When you see the work and hours gone into fab'ing my car, buying a factory built frenchie is just a bit bland.
Although they are nice machines, just not for me. :D

Don't get me wrong, I admire you for doing it, saving an old car is always worthwhile, but modifying? Now you see, that's the bit I just don't get. Why spend all that time making a VW into something acceptable, when with the DS "from the factory" you are getting a ton of style, and the greatest step forward in automotive design ever.

The first production car with disc brakes.
The first with adjustable (rising rate) suspension.
The first with a working semi-automatic gearbox.
The first with designed crumple zones and an engine designed to go under the passenger compartment in a frontal accident.
If you get a post '68 car, the first with steering headlamps.
Oh, and if handling's your thing, it's (technically) mid-engined, and the different sized tyres front and rear make the handling neutral (neither excessive over- or under-steer).
And if you get a blowout at 70+mph (I've tested this one) all that changes is it gets a bit louder in the cabin.

If you don't believe me, see what Mr May has to say about it here.

The fact you are quoting Mr May makes this car uncool.

That's without taking in to account it's French!!

This may well be a wind up! If not then you may be missing the point of slamming an old car and making it go faster than it was ever was designed for.

If you ever get the chance to drive a well sorted quick Aircooled car,do it! :D

If I was ever going to buy a French car then it would be an SM. Maybe an early Aircooled Renault, Decked with a flat 4 turbo motor up it's Arse!!

Done it.

Have had an 80s 911, a 912 (way better balanced that the 911), but they were both squashed beetles and lacking "thing". The Karmann Ghia I had for a while had "thing", but was slow, cramped and uncomfortable. Oh, and like all VWs of that era (including the Porsches, which really are evolved beetles) rot like crazy.

The best (allround) aircooled car I've ever driven? A 1972 Citroen GS.

The DS oozes cool and innovation, if you don't get it, fine. Each to their own. BTW, the SM is a reskinned DS with a Masarati engine. And at last, we agree on something I'd have one in a shot (in fact I'm working on it.

Shall we shake and be friends about it - we can disagree, and still admire each others toys.

Finally, did you know that the DS was intended to have a flat 6 aircooled engine, but the money ran short and cooling problems for the rear two cylinders killed that idea. An SM engine will fit.
