Leaky shed roof

If I can get it dried out, I need to re-do the shed roof..

The wood's not fubar, just the felt.. (there was a big ol' conifer draping it's branches all over it and about 3" deep of conifer droppings sitting on there too - I've cut the conifer back and swept the crap off the roof)..

Ideally I'd like to re-cover it in a single sheet.. something like a tarp or some heavy plastic sheet... is this practical/viable??

Or do I have to do the roofing felt thing?

Do the felt thing, a tarp will flap about, degrade and you'll be back to square one, felt should last years.

And if you get felt, go to a roofing supplier and get some decent thickness stuff, even builders merchants sell thin crap

you can, even while raining, tack a bit of felt over the old. Layer it like roof tiles and it will keep the water out while any sunshine will immediately start to dry the old felt and board underneath.

dont tack directly into the roof, fold the felt over the sides and tack and use pitch/ tar/ whatever they call it to glue the felt down.

that will give you a breather.

My idea (and bearing in mind I have zero experience of roofing/shed roofs etc.) was to whip the old felt off, contact adhesive the bare roof and tarp (or sheet, or whatever) down and baton the edges (like you would with felt)..

I've had a shufty round the interweb and seen a lot of 'shed felt'.. looks very thin..

There's a Jewsons down the road, I'll have a look in there.. reckon it'll be a month or 2 before it's properly dry anyway..

I proclaim my self the leaky shed King - as I was too tight to repair my garage roof and wooden extension 'properly' for years and honed my roof fixing/ bodging skills.

When it rained, my garage had its own weather, it would carry on raining for a good hour afterwards.

Tarp is a crap temp fix.

K.. I'll ditch the tarp idea..

What about butyl pond liner??

Although I suspect that would be hideously expensive...

Will keep 'em peeled for some half-decent felt... it's a rented property, while I don't mind sorting stuff like this I'm not about to lavish loads of cash on it.

.

You could use Damp proof membrane, its for under floors in houses.
They do a heavy duty one for use as a Radon gas barrier.
If i remember correctly a 50 square metre roll was about £65, contact your local friendly builder for an offcut :D as i don't think you will be needing 50 square metres unless it is a very large shed :D

It's something like 12' x 10'... although I've not measured it so could be way out (but 50m is definitely overkill)..

My new shed arrived this week, tomorrow I will be spending the day putting it up, I hope.

Old one was leaking again, but is falling apart and rotten as well.

Should be fun. :)

Carl.

Thankfully, the wood on the roof is still sound - despite it being soaked through..

I tested it the other day (a 15st fat bloke walking over it should be test enough ;) )

Aside from that it's pretty sound.. couple of boards to slide back into place and I might board the inside if I can get some cheap sheets of exterior ply..

And the bench needs sorting.. some shelves, tool storage, a vice, bench grinder, a clear out, some hooks for hanging bikes.... not much then
