I'm resigned to the fact that this is beyond my expertise & tools

Any idea how much bike shops charge to remove bastards?

Since this pic was taken the bearing covers have been removed & there's no teeth on the cup

If all the teeth are gone, it'll be a bastard for a shop to do as well.
The cost will depend on how well equipped and skilled your shop is. Somewhere that mainly sells bikes might not even be able to do it.

I'd probably be bracing myself for 2 or 3 hours labour, and then thank my lucky stars when it's less

Just drill it out yourself... A decent drill with a good bit, and plenty of patience - no need for anything else!

Bloody great hammer to smash the axle through, then pick out the pieces. *

*Obviously this is probably a stupid idea, but it does make use of a bloody great hammer.

I was thinking that, have you tried that?

a drill ? with what bits? i used for metal drill bits on a ceased rotor bolt an it barely did anything

make sure you use ear plugs an ear guards on top or youle end up with tinitus trying to drill
something like that good luck though

Re:

Looks like a bugger of a job and £££s to outsource. Thinking laterally here....Try some plasticine and make a mould of the tooth pattern. Measure the diameter of the toothed part and get the closest matching socket. Mark off the teeth on the socket from the plasticine and grind out holes/slots to match the teeth with an angle grinder. Slot adapted socket in and wrench it free after a good soak overnight in WD40. You may need to bolt and washer the socket on the axle to keep it secure. A large wrench, a short length of scaffold over it for extra leverage and gently work it free after securing the frame first.

Nope, WD40 wont do anything. Needs to be thcker - plusgas or proper penetrating oil

Agree with rest of the sentiment on here. It's a hard and time consuming job. The bike shop will charge for their time, so could be expensive. Have a go yourself if you can, hardly do much more damage

A decent metal drill bit will go through the bearings , which if you do it right will free the spindle. Once all the insides are out, the threaded part is relatively easy to cut out

I'd be tempted to get a metal hole saw bit, use the crank bolt thread as a centre guide, this is a pillar drill job so I'd take it to a decent machine shop.
