Late 80's Claud Butler Spectre w/Biopace

Very glad to find that you have a dedicated "how much is my XYZ worth forum" as I am about to commit what is considered the cardinal sin on most other forums and join just to ask that question!

I have a rather tired example of (I believe) a late 80's Claud Butler Spectre, I am pretty sure it is late 80's as I remember my dad buying it...later I adopted it.

It has been largely unused for a good number of years, only getting an occasional ride over the last decade.

It has spots of rust throughout and the gear shift for the rear derailleur has failed making the ride rather joyless as only three gear are available by way of the front derailluer. The fix for this is complicated as the gear shift is integrated with the brake lever, which i would guess makes repair challenging economically.

BUT underneath this all is a rather nicely put together 501 frame and an interesting biopace group set.

I am thinking about bunging it on eBay for £25 collection only... but I may be missing a trick , or indeed, asking too much!

Advice is welcomed!
Best regards,
Chris

Welcome to the forum!
I think you're in the right ballpark there with the price due to the rust and gear problems.
Under that you have a good frame. Good luck with the sale :) .

Thanks, I hope it goes to someone who will bring to back to life, or even if it is split into components frame and group set and lives on that way. I don't have the knowledge or enthusiasm to do so!

Just needed to check that it wasn't of any specific interest / value!

On the 'bay now.

Thanks for the advice.

The 500lx groupset was for the 1990 season. I had the 1992 Spectre with the 531magnum frame and still 500lx.

If it had been a little bit bigger...

Somebody must have loved it as the original tioga headset has gone with a later shimano stx to replace it.

Not seen a white one before either

Yep, my dad always looks after his kit well (unlike me). He has a aluminium framed Marin Manitou with the very old school rear suspension arrangement, still in good condition and used a few times a year.

Now that marin is worth a few pennies

What sort of money? (I think it has lost its stickers and may have had some minor welding done to strengthen the swing arm pivot)

I will see if he can email a photo at some point

Its quite sought after but if it has been welded that impacts on the value.
