Late 19th Century? Defiance

Some interesting lots in this auction. I’d go for this one if I were buying. Nice detail of the brake rod passing through the stem and headtube with a tyre contacting brake pad. There’s a couple of others that look similar in the auction but don’t think they are as old/authentic as this one.

Interesting pitch on the chain/chainwheel. Sure that’s bigger than inch pitch which is what I thought it was.

Used to ride an 1890s Rudge that was very similar to this, that had a front brake with leather pad that brakes directly on the top of the tyre. Not with a through the stem rod set up though. It was a small lever attached to the stem rather than the bars.

Spoon brake.

It certainly does look like a spoon shape! The ones on a Penny Farthing or a Facile look more like a spoon though!

The one on the Rudge I rode was rectangular with a piece of leather stuck to it.
