Mrs LMTTM & I have a dog, Juno
Pic
She is a year old and is a Dachshund.
Whilst out walking last night she went off of the path we we walking along and started running parallel to us through the trees - loves chasing rabbits and squirrels etc.
This behavior isn't unusual but last night she disappeared from our sight. We waited for a few minutes blowing her whistle and calling her name but nothing. :?
So into the undergrowth we go.
20 minutes passes and still nothing - starting to panic a bit now are we were in huge woods.
30 minutes pass and Mrs LMTTM hears muffled barking
We identify the approximate area that the intermittent barking is coming from and find a labyrinth of rabbit holes and warrens - we suddenly realise the barking is coming from under ground
The are Juno had decided to explore was dense with stinging nettle and not a dock leaf in sight.
So with nowt but shorts and t shirt on I start to wade into the nettle to get to where we think the barking is coming from. At this point the barking is very quiet/muted.
After repeated stings I find a large hole big enough to get my head and shoulder into in I get (more nettle stings) and call her name. More muffled barking.
At this point I send Mrs LMTTM home to get a spade and some torches.
20 minutes pass and I have my arm down every hole I can constantly calling her name, barking still very muffled.
Then suddenly after pulling my arm out of one hole she apprears - absolute elation
Covered in mud, sand etc and looking most perplexed but thankfully safe.
Scoop up dog and head back to the car park.
At this point the effects of the nettle stings start to become evident  But so happy that after an hour she is safe.
Mrs LMTTM arrives ten minutes later, after some Jenson Button style driving, and is over joyed that Juno is safe.
Phew.
Not having kids I cant think what it must be like to loose one for even a minute. After the emotion of just loosing a dog for an hour I don't want children!
So all is well that ends well.
Nettle rash still very evident this morning - every time I move my hands its like pins and needles
Next time we get a dog we go with a breed that wasn't bred to hunt things underground
