Laptop dvd drive issue

Hi sorry for the laptop related post.
I have a dell laptop with a NEC 5560a dvd drive that will not read discs.
When i install a disc it clicks but that is all. The weird thing is that it managed to boot from my new windows disc.

I have updated the driver but still nothing.

Can somebody please help?
Thanks in advance, Mike

clean the lense, also drive use different lasers for different media, so the laser for cd roms might be faulty, but the dvd laser is ok.

Do a google search of the disc drive drivers - the ones on the Dell site are, hilariously, not always the right ones!!! I had a problem with the trackpad on my Dell laptop and downloaded stuff straight from the manufacturer as opposed to Dell.....

Also check which region your dvd is set to - you can do this through media player, but again, do a google search to find out for sure!! My dvd player was set to the wrong region and wouldn't play discs, although it would acknowledge they were there, although that was for films so a data disc might react differently

xp has a known issue with this ..i had it happen several times....there is a fix for it if you check the forums for it.
