Lacquer or similar to protect rub down decals

Hello, please can someone tell me whether car lacquer (the type you can buy in a spray can from Halfords) will be suitable? I had hoped to be able to cover the decal with brushed in clear nail lacquer but that is specifically mentioned as something not to do. Can anyone also recommend the best technique to apply the spray - several thin coats? Thank you, Tim
