Krusty 93 Kilauea

Well not so Krusty but I needed to differentiate this thread from the others, common as muck these Kilauea's at the moment.

Anyway I picked this up a couple of weeks ago in a sorry state absolutely covered in muck and grease. I've totally stripped it down and cleaned it and the frame looks like it's been ridden hard through gravel. There's chips and scratches all over it including the stem and forks hence why I also removed the decals as they were in a right state. Some of the parts are not original so I won't be re-using them.

Plus points are that the frame is straight with no dents and even with all the chips there isn't any rust on it whatsoever which is impressive.

So here it is, I've covered all the exposed metal in red primer and ordered some paint which hopefully matches and I'll get all those chips covered up. My intention is to try and keep it as original as I possibly can and if it looks half decent when rebuilt I may just leave it.

Cant have too many '93 Kilauea's on the site :D

Look forward to seeing it built up and ridden 8)

Well I'm not sure it's that much better, after sourcing a reasonable close match to the paint (RAL3005) it certainly still shows the chips. I suspect this frame has been sprayed before as the red is pretty inconsistent. Some of the touch ups are spot on and some stand out a mile. Anyway I'm not going to spend too much time as this is a commuter bike and not a wall hanger.

Anyway I touched peach individual chip, used t-cut, Autoglym super resin polish and will wax it once new decals are fitted, at least it will be protected from the elements.

Some parts on order too to bring it back up to standard.

The paint on mine is kind of different shades and hasnt been resprayed. Just think its how they were and the light you look at them under. Some of it is a really deep burgundy/ wine colour with real depth to the finish and other parts seem to be more flat

Re:

Thanks, that’s good to know then so it’s no doubt original paint then.

It does look better now that I’ve put new decals on it and polished it up. Once I’ve got more parts fitted it should also help. I’ll take another pic if it soon. I just really didn’t want to lose it’s originality, as someone said once it’s gone it’s gone.

So after more degreasing, I've got the brakes fitted. This is the first time I've fitted Dia-Compe brakes and after finding some advice on these they're actually really good to fit & adjust.

New decals fitted.

Forks and stem fitted, headset re-greased. It was a bit crunchy but now the grease has smothered the bearings fully it's a lot better. The original bearing cage was damaged which was doing the cups no favours so I've binned that and used loose bearings. For future reference for anyone, once the cage is removed for the 1/4" bearings it requires an extra 3 if fitting loose ones.

Those rims are Avid ones and not the originals but they will do for the time being, they also took a lot of degreasing and the hub bearings need re-doing too. I'm starting to think this bike was never serviced in it's life, at least not for some years.

I still need to find a more suitable silver paint to help hide the million scratches on the front end.

8) looking better with the decals fitted.

And yes, the brakes are easy to fit and set up, and they work really well too, my favorite brake :)
