Can anyone tell me the RAL number for a colour close to the early pistachio green used by Kona on the Exposif?

I'm thinking of getting my '88 Expolsif powder coated now the winter is here.

You could ask Paul Brodie, as twas he who specified and painted it. I wouldn't tell him you're going to get his work of art powder-coated though. Personally, and without meaning any personal offence, I think that would be a crass thing to do and would halve the value of your bike.

My frame is dented and very well used, so its value is next to nothing anyway.

I want it powder coated because it should last longer that way.

Its current colour is a rather ugly shade of 'too fugly to steal' rattle can black an it needs redoing soon. I was going to go for a standard colour, but as its going to be done it would be nice to (sort of) return it to what it was.

The bike will never be a garage queen, and I'm using it next year to go touring on, so durability is more important than looks.

"One day it will be returned to its pistachio coloured glory and be hung in my lounge as remembrance of its greatness, but only after I get too decrepit to ride it any more, and only if my son won't ride it."

I think he might be ok with it given the sentiment...

Ah. Somehow I didn't read that into your question.

Brodie was an artist turned bike painter turned frame builder. He may have had one or two staff enabling him to say 'we', but his business was very small. I doubt very much whether he had the facilities for powder coating and I doubt whether he went by RAL codes. You could ask him though. No point asking Kona. Any question like that, they mention 'that office fire' etc.

Nearest I think you will get would be "6019 Pastel Green"

I don't have a frame to match it against though...

I think that RAL 6019 is a bit too pale and a bit too "turquoise-y" Gil.

Maybe BS4800 - 14E51 is nearer?

In fact, I think your best bet would be to have it wet painted and by someone who would be prepared to mix the best match. Argos possibly?
Ask Sinnerman for his advice when it comes to the spatter - I seem to recall that he did a pretty cool job on a couple of spatter Konas.

If you need a colour swatch I can do one for you from my frame.

As Argos have been the Kona appointed frame repairers for the UK since the dawn of time, I expect they have repainted a 1988 Explosif or two in their time.

I persist in thinking that Argos work to an Italian colour palette though, rich lush colours, whereas US painters work to a paler palette. How that feeds into RAL codes I couldn't say, but I haven't seen a Fat Chance or Klein as painted by Argos that looked right to me.

I did consider wet paint, but I think powder would be more durable.

The bike is still being used and will be put on planes and trains next summer so maybe I'll get it done in powder this time and do a proper resto in a few years.

I'll have a look at the RAL pastel green, as the coaters use RAL codes.

Thanks for all the help folks.

Well, this is the best colour match to my frame, which may have faded a little over time, but not a lot. It's sampled from the best condition paintwork anyway, it's the best I could do.

Obviously how this looks to you will depend on your monitor and whether it is calibrated or not, but I've also printed out a swatch of this colour and fine adjusted the colour balance etc for a best match to the frame. The swatch gives you a better idea of the colour, as you're viewing it by relected light, the same as the frame and under the same colour temperature lighting too.
You're welcome to it if it's any use to you.

Edit - Should read before I post. Scrub that last bit then
