Kona Lavadome - yellow with black/red splatter

Retro Newbie
Hi guys, this is my first post on here as I've got a Kona Lavadome which is yellow with the black/red splatter and I was trying to find out what year it is and any other details I can. I'll post pics up tomorrow.
I'm guessing from the fact I've had it 17/18 years and I bought it s/hand it must be around about 1990.

Cheers

Dave.

Think that's an 89, but Anthony, the resident Retrobike Kona expert will confirm. Couple of other members have similar bikes.

Well they didn't give them model years at that stage - the 1991 catalogue was the first with a date on it. Your bike is in what's generally known as the 1990 catalogue, except it doesn't say so and it came out in 1989. So that's clear enough then. Just as the 2010 catalogue came out in 2009.

And ok then, it isn't actually in it, because the colour of the bike in the catalogue doesn't appear to have made it through to production, but it's one of the three colour schemes that you will see on 1990 Lava Domes.

The catalogue is in the gallery and archive part of this website.

Are there two different model years / production runs represented by the different decals? I've had two early bikes one had clear decals, the other white (like the frames in the pics), aside from that they were identical.

didn't these have an indication of year from the frame serial ( T89 for example) ?

I your other poste I posted this which I believe is the same colour as yours (and more pics for Anthony if he's not already got it)

Do you have pictures? I have no photo of a '88' (i.e., 89) or '90 Kona without a white decal.

Hi guys thanks for all the messages and help.
I took a couple of pictures earlier today and most of you were right, so I guess it's an '89.

I did'nt realise this whole retro thing existed but I'm glad I found you guys

:D

Well it would conventionally be called a 1990, but it's your bike, so you can call it whatever you like.

Next we could discuss it's size. As it has a 17" c-t seat tube, it is of course a size 16. Well, you wouldn't want everything to be boringly straightforward, would you? And I think it has an 11cm head tube and I'd be interested to know its c-c top tube - I don't know, but I'm going to guess 52cm.
