Kona Lavadome 19" Purple 1991 - Lots of original bits

Obiwan

Retro Newbie
I'm selling my first mountain bike, I have owned it from new. A 1991 Kona Lavadome in the classic purple. It would be perfect for a restoration project as many of the parts are original. The paint work is not great, it has a few poor attempts at patching up chips and scratches.

Pickup from Sheffield ideally, however I'm down in the Herts/Essex area in a few weeks so if anyone is down south and put off by it being in Sheffield, we could probably arrange something.

£100

Cheers, I'm pretty sure it's an 18", I've kept the original receipt somewhere! Happy to measure it to confirm. Where do you measure from/to?

Very nice indeed, good ad too, very comprehensive! I'm about to build one identical, so your spec list will be really helpful, cheers!

centre of bottom bracket to top of seat tube

nice bike :D

Well now I'm fully confused, I always thought it was an 18", I had it sized to fit me in a very reputable LBS and I rode it regularly for over 10 years never thinking it felt too big (I'm 5'11")

I thought that the extended seat tube meant that an 18" Kona didn't measure 18", but this doesn't seem to be correct on my later Konas which do seem to measure their marked sizes.

So this one measures:
20 1/4" Centre of BB to top of seat tube at seat clamp
17 3/4" Centre of BB to top surface of crossbar
But the wheelbase (centre of axle to centre of axle with forks straight) measures 41 3/4" which doesn't match up with any 'E' on the table at the bottom of this scan;

And no, the forks aren't bent in case anyone's wondering!
I tried to measure 'C' but haven't a clue where the diagram tells you measure!

So it could be 18/19/20"! :?

Maybe someone with one from the same era can check theirs and can put me right?

Nice bike! :D

If I'm not mistaken (and I could be, it's been known to happen  ), up to and including '92 Kona measured
their frame's by the length of the seat tube only (from the top of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat tube)
Wasn't until '93 they started measuring centre to top
At any rate, it is certainly larger than 18", try measuring the full length of the seat tube on it's own and you should have your answer
Hope this helps and good luck with the sale! :D

Cheers Canuck, if your right it measures 19 1/4" so it would make it a 19" I guess.
