I wondered if the Lava Dome decal was in the '97 style making it one of the funny cross-over decal '96 models...

Is your '96 Tange tubing? In '97 they went more generic on the tubes i think :?

Both the decals are in the 96 style and colour, so I would have little doubt that it is a 96 frame. The 97 style is shown below - the paint appears to be very similar.

Nothing wrong with generic 4130, the butting profile and gauge are more important and I think the 97 frames were as light as any earlier ones.

Nobody said there was. It's just another indicator of year.

True, but I think it was only 93 and 94 when the Cinder Cone and Lava Dome had Tange frames and your bike doesn’t look like the 94 (the one below belongs to someone on here).

I’ll be interested to know how you find this compares to your earlier one. I think you might find it’s a fair bit lighter, even though the top tube is slightly longer. I once owned a 92 Cinder Cone, which is supposedly lighter than that year’s Lava Dome, and although I liked it my recollection is of a heavy bike with a ‘steady’ ride, whereas I’d describe the 97 Lava Dome’s ride as ‘lively’ (and I guess the 97 is just about the same as the 96). Looks like a good buy anyway!
