I have seen pictures of both matt and gloss, although it is not always clear from a photo. The catalogue image appears to be matt ...
... but this one is almost certainly gloss.
And this looks like it is both in one photo.
Then there are examples of flames in other colours (like @al-onestare 's) that tend to be gloss. I think it is safe to say that if you were looking to replicate the look, then you could choose whatever you like more!

Yes they are the pictures I have seen, I remember the 96 frames were a matt finish too.
I remember my 96 cinder cone that I bought new was matt red, after I washed it and wiped it down with GT85 it was glossy thereafter!
The 97 KU is a matt finish also in the flame design.

The two flame Hots in the pic were both mine. The picture taken a week after we had moved house, hence the mess! As already discussed in Doms thread, the one in the background is a 98 and gloss finish. The foreground Hot is a 97 and is a matt finish. I also owned a 97 Caldera, made in the same place and that was also a Matt finish.
