kona headset 1 1/8" threaded

hello retro people
i want to replace my headset
its a impact kona 1 1/8" threaded on a 89 kona
i want to keep the orig forks on stem
i tryed a shimano stx and the stack hight was to high
its got to be quite abit lower

most headsets are taller on the top parts than a kona impact/control centre

BUT

ball bearing ones are generally smaller on the bottom bearing, which balances it out a bit. cartridge ones are no good though

I used a CK gripnut headset on my '92 Explosif. They're hard to find in 1 1/8 but they work well on forks with short steerer tubes (like stock P2's).

Also, some of the older no logo King headsets have a lower stack height than the current version. I'm using one of those for the lower cup, which gives me even more thread to work with. Needless to say, however, they are getting pretty rare.

I got away with an XTR M901 headset on my 1992 Kona, it is a lower stack height than STX.

Usually it's only the bottom race that's trashed - how about a hybrid with the bottom race from the STX and the Kona on top?
