Kona, good points and bad points

The bikes I have ridden in the past is Marin's and a Cannondale which I still own since 1999, but always have liked Kona's but never got round buying one for myself until I joined this website and seeing alot of old Kona's that have be build back to his former glory, I have bought 2 old Kona's from ebay recently and started to work on them, it's more expensive that I thought! lol but it's fun and interesting project for me.

Today I have been busy working on the 1995 Kona Hahanna after getting the frame power coated this week, as I have been working them I noticed some good points and some bad points on them.

The good points
1. you can get an old Kona and put any colour you fancy and it will still looked good.

2. the steel tubes and the sliding top tube, P2 forks are good looking and very durable/strong

The bad points
1. easy, the clamp on the seatpost that run the cable through for the rear canti brakes, as it's aluminium which it's soft, the cable can make the hole bigger after alot movements, they are very hard to find if you need a new one, Kona should have a canti fitting on the frame for it.

2. the Kona headset, old type for threaded P2, at the bottom, there is big gap where you can see the ball bearings easily, I dont think it will be good if you keep getting mud and water in there, should they have a bigger round plate on the P2 to stop mud and water getting in?

Overall, I do think Kona's are cool bikes especially in the 90's years, the Hahanna is 50% finished, hope it will be completed next week, so far I am pleased what I have done, will post some pics when finished.

Does anyone agree with my views, feel free to comment...

I quite liked the "dog collar" idea, but it's true they should have made a commitment to keeping them available. I guess most owners of older Konas have moved to V-brakes. My '94 Kilauea had Maguras and now has Vees, so the lack of a dog collar isn't a problem for me.

Sounds like you've got a problem there - a missing seal maybe, or the wrong size of ball bearings, or maybe a mismatched crown race.

My one complaint about my Kilauea is that the Riv-nut bottle cage and rack mountings have all stripped out or come loose in the frame. Too bad they didn't braze them in. I'll be having them all replaced when it's time for a respray.

good: the ride is one of the best out there
bad:every bugger has one!

my lavadome has a noodle round the seat tube for the rear canti. Strangely mine doesnt feature in any catalogues!?

I've owned over the years bikes from Diamond Back, Trek, Parkpre, Cannondale, Specialized, Marin & Kona. The Parkpre & Kona stand out as they have very similar geometry plus both out-handle the rest by a long way. They are my favourites :D

Seconded!

i guess i should be thankful my secondhand kona came with that seatpost cableguide---didnt reaklize how hard they were to get---i run a small piece of that plastic cable protector tubing inside the guide and then run the cable thru that to help keep wear down
i guess my beef with the bike is routing the cables under the BB shell tho plenty of outfits did it---ive thought about using that protector tubing down there too but havent yet

Didn't they use the noodle on pre-1990 frames (possibly on the '90 too)?
