Re:

Yay! Quick trip to stand outside the @rideandrepair workshop this morning means the threads in the BB shell should now be playing by the rules. Once I thaw out it's off to the shed to get building.

But first, time for a brew and a Jaffa cake!

Re:

Looking good Rick.
Sorry I couldn't let you into the workshop while I chased your BB threads.
This pesky global pandemic does place limitations on my preferred levels of hospitality.

Re:

No worries Paul, at least the sun was shining!

So, I don't like the stem but it's quite a low / short clamp, and since the steerer is cut to length any other of my spares is only about half on the steerer. So I'll stick with it for now and pretend it matches.

Been out playing with brakes and gears today but forgot to get some snaps so I'll head back out if I get 5 minutes over the weekend.

it's not quite there yet as it turns out I don't own a 28.6 front mech to replace the rusty tourney one which came off. But I have a shim on its way to me to sort that out. Other than that the parts bin is providing everything I need from here on in.

Re:

I feel your pain with regards to stem choice being limited by a short steerer. The number of times I've been caught out and had to compromise on headset quality to fit one with lower stack height, or chased down a stem with the same properties. I've found that Truvativ XR stems are quite useful in this situation as they have a single M6 pinch bolt in the middle of the stem which allows you a bit more wiggle room when the steerer doesn't come all/most of the way up the stem. The XR comes in both 25.4mm and 31.8mm handlebar variants I believe. Funn Funduro stems (https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/mob ... prod156041) have two bolts, but they are a very low stack height, but only for oversize 31.8mm bars (which would look great on your build by the way).
The other option is a steerer extender that uses a quill inside your steerer, and provides more steerer length, and is totally invisible once fitted compared to the external type stem raisers which always look awful. This is a BBB one which is usually well reviewed on here: https://www.highonbikes.com/products/bb ... wYQAvD_BwE
I made the mistake of trying a cheap eBay option, but that just didn't secure into the steerer properly at all, so I binned that idea.
Hope this helps in your quest for a good stem!

Re:

Progress so far.
Used the existing bars stem post and saddle. Pulled the hope mono brakes from the b17 and some floating black rotors. Braided hoses are annoying me a little I think I'll swap them out for black if I find some. XT shifters and an old XTR mech for the back. Used the purple 32 middle ring and added a black 22 ring but am lacking a larger for the outer so that's on my little list so I can run triple, double will do for the short term and I might add in a bashing for now.

Need to dig out some gear cable outer to run to the rear mech, shim for the front mech then I can sort the chain. Taken the old 9 speed cassette from the b17 so I'll use that chain too. Fitted the Maxxis tyres which need a bit of fettling as they are not quite seated right.

Brew time.

Re:

Nearly there. Just needs pedals and setting up (waiting for daylight and above zero temperatures for that job!) but thought I'd do a quick weigh in. Looking like a we'll come in about 10.5 kilo / 23 lb, which ain't too bad.
