I'll be watching this too - if only as a reminder to pull my finger out and get on with my own one... :x

I considered a re-paint, but I think the cost is prohibitive. A really tidy Cinder Cone went for £180 on eBay the other day, Argos charge £140 for a re-spray so not worth it. Lots of T-Cut and maybe some touch-up paint. The parts are quality, but cosmetically challenged bits that don't cost too much. The this bike is for riding not polishing so I wanted good stuff without the silly prices.

Current parts amassed from other RetroBIKE members are:

raidan73
Kona Saddle
Kona High Command brake levers
X-Lite seapost bolt
XT seatpost

Konafan78
DX rear mech
Kona 165 handlebars
Kona Velocity stem

scant
DX thumb shifters

also eBay:
HB-50 (500LX) hubs on Araya rims
Tioga Psycho / Muddy Fox amberwalls
KMC z51 chain

Spanky22b also gave me
Suntour chainset
Suntour brakes
Suntour pedals

just need a DX front mech and some cables now...

When I was doing mine a quick trip to halfords and a couple of 'chip sticks' used for touching paint up on cars, fiat red and some kind of blue and you can just add your own splatter over the chips on the frame - sorted :D

Just my 2 pence but before you think about any type of touch up, make sure you give it a really deep clean and address the rust spots with some Cilit Bang / rust remover. When removed it'll look a whole lot better and may not need any significant work other than clear coat.

For £30 you could always have it sandblasted, Zinc coated and then powder coated in white. Decals from Gil_m £20 and then a couple of colour matched tins of paint for the splatter.

No two bikes were ever the same so you cant go wrong there, you get to play Picasso for under £60 gain a massive sense of achievement and no further rust to worry about and a new looking frame at the end of it.

The rust is under the paint all over. It's not a rare frame with special history where the original finish is part of its value. It is nice and worth tidying and riding though. I'm with Sinnerman on this one, a repaint will really look a treat!

mmmmm, there are a few that are indistinguishable even to the trained eye imho.

I guess its about how patient you are with it, and how accurate you want it to be.

But like you say each to there own.
