Tel, you was right 
The tubs turned out to be clinchers! never been off since it left the factory!
It took at least 1/2 hr to get each off and it appears they were glued to the rims? Any one come across that before?
Anyway new tyres and tubes fitted, front brake cable installed. Just bar tape and end plugs to go.
More pictures soon. Apart from the damage to the decals/ transfers it is in a really good and little use condition.

Phew! My reputation remains intact....
They're not glued it's just a natural bond, think about all the weather conditions those tyres have endured over the last 25 years, extreme heat, cold, etc. I've had it a few times and yes the bond can certainly seem like a glue!
