Not a big Klein follower, but didn't all Kleins have internal cable routing? Not the external guides on the frame shown.

No.
1996 Trek-Pulses and Pulses from 1997 onwards had external cable routing. Also Attitude had external cable routing in 1999.
Many of their basic road bikes like Quantum and late Stages had external cable routing too.

Anyways, looking at that frame, the cable guides, down tube gusset and seatstays look an awful lot like my '99 M2. My M2 has the 'S' stamped in the gusset I believe; that would be a sure-fire sign.
