Klein headset bearing sizes

I am wondering if someone can tell me what size the bearings are in the headset?

I need them for a 1991 attitude (with an MC1). I can find some information about the system but nothing tells me the sizes.

Any other info about changing the bearings would be gratefully received. I have the pdf file of Klein bikes that explains the tool with poor black and white images. It isn't very clear though. Even getting the dust caps off are a challenge at the moment. Can anyone also enlighten me on how they are attached?

It is beginning to sound like I shouldn't be anywhere near this stuff. I will be sweet, I just need a little more knowledge of this secretive system!!!

Cheers,
Andy

the bearings are Klein specific and you can only get them through Klein/Trek or occasionally on ebay. If you are very lucky a Klein dealer who is long enough in the business may still have some lying around. Those are no standard bearings. Outside diameter is 2" for both.

Trek part no. is 971604 Mission Control/MC2/MC3/MC3.1 bearing 2.0" O.D.

they are pressed in and secured with Loctite and the fork is pressed into the bearings and secured with Loctite. The rubber seals may be glued in as well. To remove the upper one you'll have to remove the MC1 and then you can carefully try to pry the seal out. It is only a dust seal, the bearings themself are sealed too. But be careful, those rubber seals are not available anymore. The lower seal can only be removed after the fork is removed.

Yes, it is a tricky job to replace the bearings. You can pound the fork out and in with a hammer but you'll need some sort of adapter to stick into the steerer tube where you can hammer on. If you are not experienced in such work better let someone do it who has the proper tools and the knowledge how to use them.

Some additional info is in the newer manual, page 56ff

http://archive.kleinbikes.com/assets/as ... 1_1172.pdf

It explains how to do the work on the newer frames with the newer tool and a hammer.

Cheers, Carsten

Thanks for the info. It helps a lot.

I have requested from Trek USA some information about ordering the part. If and when it arrives I will turn on the lathe a plug that I can insert into the steerer tube to "gently" tap the forks / bearings out with a hammer.

I have seen a few drawings but just needed that extra info.

It is crazy that they did not use a standard bearing size. Surely there are bearing stores that stock this as a unit. Would Klein have specifically ordered them to be manufactured for this purpose only?

If 2" is the outside diameter do you know, by chance, The inside diameter and the width of the bearing. I can ask some suppliers that I know if they are available elsewhere.

Thanks again Carsten

i'll measure the ID tonight. as far as i know Klein got those bearings from Boeing. i wouldn't exclude that bearings with proper dimensions are available elsewhere but not sure about the internals, i have never taken one apart.

thanks again. i am in the process of trying a number of suppliers and trek.

here is another question about the aluminium foil superbikes!
There is some bubbling under the paint in a couple of areas on teh frame. I am planning to strip this frame and repaint. Is there anything that I need to be careful of? Is the bubbling paint more serious than just a respray?

cheers,
andy

those are the bearings you'll need

http://cgi.ebay.com/Klein-MC1-headset-b ... dZViewItem

the bubbling is a common problem on older Kleins. seems like the aluminum underneath the paint starts to corrode. it is not a risk for the frame, just doesnt look nice. if the paint is in good condition otherwise i would first try to repair the damaged areas and repaint only those.
what paint is it?
it is difficult to match the original Klein fade paints but the one color paints can be matched.

The bearings are mine! The forks are out! The seals are safe! Respray coming soon. Undecided about colour. It is currently bright green but am considering a bronze colour like the trek singlespeed.

My mind may change again in between now and when it gets stripped and primed

Many thanks for the eagle eyes on ebay and your font of knowledge. I am sure I will hassle you again in the future!!!
