So another "auction" that was bent - original listing "sold" for £470 and back on......

I'm sorry, but if you list something as a straight auction you sell at the final price, not put the top bid in yourself or get a mate to cover it for you. This practice is appearing more and more with bike auctions. My opinion is that if someone is underhand enough to do this, then how can you trust that the description of the item is accurate or trustworthy?

^^Good point^^

Does look like a good deal and an absolutely excellent start point for a quality build unless it's a pack of lies

My guess is the dude didn't have any idea what it's worth - and as you say had a mate cover his auction in case it went for buttons. Very poor!

Even so I might be tempted if I had the dosh right now.... Happily I don't like the paint :D

Bidding

The practice of shell bidding is monitored by eBay- so I am told. Also you can report dodgy bidding practices to them. They can suspend eBay seller accounts and check transaction/ bidding accounts/locations

This seller clearly knew exactly "what he had".

Check out his feedback/previous items sold............

Haha! Yeah he's been a busy boy

I see he uses that 'kult' thing in some of his descriptions... What's all that about anyway? What is 'kult'???

That's a nice question! The german word "Kult" comes from the latin "cultus" (--> eng.: "cult", but also "culture") and has the usual meaning of a religious act involving religious/spiritual artefacts and places. However, its meaning (in german, don't know if in english, too) has been extended to things that are cult like or have cult like status, especially in slang, i.e. you have cult like objects/artefacts, people that celebrate the cult/"spirit" at certain places by doing ritual like acts and so on. Now, bitd to things that were:

a) highly individual and/or just a myth / unreachable (i.e. a real original not a copy, different looking, innovative, extremely rare, expensive..."Cool wall"...)
= "cult objects"

b) praised by very few highly relevant people/institutions (team racers, bike magazine photographers/testers...BoTM...)
= "priests"

c) known from and celebrated at important places (bike magazines, bike shops, bike fairs...did I mention retrobike?...)
= "cult places"

d) have wholehearted fans that identify with the objects (bike magazine readers, paying (irrational) money at bike shops for (copies of) those cult objects, wear team jerseys, the bike's build is a celebrating/spiritual act shared with other fans..."Readers bikes"...)
= "followers practicing the cult"

we used to say (in Germany) they are "Kult". Oh dear, when thinking about this now while posting myself on retrobike I can only say: the Kult lives on !

Interesting stuff!

Yeah in English we have 'cult' same set of definitions

EG group or sect, usually religious

Or a small and devoted following,

Etc. All that type of stuff, but it has no *specific* relevance to cycling or retro bikes

- Of course retro biking is a good example of a 'cult' activity :D

But I see it used lots as a key word in the title of ebay listings

Item "XYZ bike part vintage old classic retro kult" So it's to appeal to German buyers who might use that as a search term?

Yes, it really seems to be a german thing. A certain bike-part being "Kult" may be compared to being tagged cool at the Cool wall. However, the word "Kult" carries much more: it may be the whole feeling of the time, that just condensated at certain bikes, parts, events, races, people etc., because those just reflected being independent, different, individual, cool, intensive... And having found yourself a way of personal expression and like-minded people via those Kult-parts, Kult-events, Kult-people...
Just like in the Cool-wall threads there was/is endless discussion in the german forums if something is "Kult" or not, because the word carries so much individuality and different types of things, more like an experience caused by something. "Kult" somehow mixes the general roots of the sport/religion with your own roots/experiences. There was an IFMA-show in 2003 where "Kult-bikes" were shown as an attempt to "catch" the Kult, and somehow it worked, or not, depends on who you ask. But there are certain "icons" of the sport/religion to which many agree to, mostly being connected to the roots of the sport as the common sense - John Tomac, Yeti / John Parker, your first bike...

It is really interesting to look at Google's result for images of "Kult" within mtb-news.de. I find it remarkable, how good it catches what "Kult" may be: bikes, events, races, parts... heck: even the search alternative "kult bier" matches
