It's a different type of screen , though wouldn't call it cheap for a thing to read books on.
£20/30 cheap ;)
£100+ is very expensive. and £150 is ridiculous, that's iPod Touch territory.
you still have to buy the book and I think they are still more than you can pick the paper version up for.
I can understand it's advantage, but not for that much.
I'll stick to £4 for a book or 2 for one offers ;)
Can always donate the book to charity, library after that.

I've got a itouch already and agree they are great but screen is to small for docs so not really a valid comparison. £109 seems great to me- suppose it's all relative but the positives are as I see it- up to 3500 books on the one machine, 1000's of free books are available to download from amazon guttinburg and other legal sources, hard back books at very reasonable prices way before they come out in paperback

and paperbacks are usually the same price or a bit cheaper.

No storage issues, which with 3 boys and all their stuff means my books are in boxes in the loft and is probably a greener way to read.

You don't get the physical object which so many folk love but the convenience thing for me is a big plus- like bitd when MP3 came out, lots of people didn't like it as you lost the physical product but who now wants to cart about a stack of cd's when travelling and the upshot has been cheaper music (still could be cheaper) and I see this happening with books as the download market expands.

only black and white and a browser is included, here is the blurb

Read-to-Me
With the Text-to-Speech feature, Kindle can read English newspapers, magazines, blogs, and ebooks out loud to you, unless the ebook's rights holder made the feature unavailable. You can switch back and forth between reading and listening, and your spot is automatically saved. Pages automatically turn while the content is being read, so you can listen hands-free. You can choose from both male and female voices which can be sped up or slowed down to suit your preference. In the middle of a great story or article but have to jump in the car? Simply turn on Text-to-Speech and listen on the go.

Voice Guide
New text-to-speech enabled menus allow customers to navigate Kindle without having to read menu options. In addition to listening to ebooks aloud, users now have the option of listening to content listings on the home screen, item descriptions, and all menu options. To turn Voice Guide on or off, press the Menu button from your Home screen. Select Settings and then press Next Page to go to Page 2 of Settings. Select "turn on" or "turn off" next to the Voice Guide setting.

New WebKit-Based Browser
Kindle's new web browser is based on WebKit to provide a better web browsing experience. Now it's easier than ever to find the information you're looking for right from your Kindle. Experimental web browsing is free to use over Wi-Fi.

Listen to Music & Podcasts
Transfer MP3 files to Kindle to play as background music while you read. You can quickly and easily transfer MP3 files via USB by connecting Kindle to your computer.

like the read to me and the mp3 option too.

You can get a free Kindle app for lots of other devices: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature...._rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=216996187&pf_rd_i=341677031

And there are lots of free books: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/bestsell...m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=1PPKJ8EBE4BP6MY0P497

I looked into it a while back, but found you could generally pick up a used paperback edition for less than the kindle e-book and I'm not bothered about a tatty cover when I read a book.

Cool thanks for that, now got it on the itouch albeit it is kind of to small for reading over a long period, gives me time to look at the free content out there as I don't really buy new fiction anyway.
