...It all seems to go downhill again :(

I've recently paid off all of my debt (it took 5 years of paying every spare penny I had), so I thought that I'd treat myself to one of the many bikes I've wanted since I was younger, as one had just come up for sale on Gumtree, and they're pretty rare.

The bike in question was a lovely X Lite Titanium Pro, complete with Trimnell dual crown, dual stem rigid forks.

The bike arrived yesterday, and it's gorgeous. Unfortunately, however, I come in to work this morning to find that my hours are being cut from 37.5 to 30 at the end of March (the joys of fixed term contracts). This now means that I take an effective pay cut of between £200 and £250 per month (I won't know the exact amount until my April wages).

This pay cut now means that I'm going to seriously struggle to save any money, and this has come right at a time when I've just passed my driving test, so need extra money for car insurance etc. as well.

So now, it looks like the only solution (certainly in the short term) would be to sell the bike which I've only just treated myself too, and haven't even ridden yet!

:( :( :(

Just don't buy a car, it will only make you poorer than ever (and fatter)

We've already got the car - I just need to be insured on it.. Got to ring the insurance company tonight to find how much they're going to sting me for now that I've gone from a named driver with a provisional license to one with a full license..

I'd keep the bike to cheer you up and as a reward for the hard work you put in.

Car insurance is a killer and you will be back to working just to survive again, the bike will help you through this.

The problem with selling something you've been looking for/wanted for ages is that the amount of money you get for it doesn't seem worthwhile when you get the cash in your hands....

Maybe keep it as long as possible and see how things pan out.

I am in/have been in the same boat as you mate. I have two months left of a 5 year loan repayment but do a bar job for two nights a week to cover the payments. 2 nights a week gets me £240 a month extra. Its a drag to have to work into the evening and not get as much sleep, but it covers the bases and if you get midweek shifts like I have, it doesnt really interfere with anything. My weekends are free still, and people buy the staff a beer occasionally too!

Shame that the pub is changing hands now and I might have to get another job for a few months instead.

That way, you keep your bike, can afford an insurance company to fist you for cover and have a premium ale or two at the weekend.

Just a thought. Hope it all pans out ok for you.

It could be worse Barney, if France turned up on Saturday you would have had to have GIVEN the bike away! Ha!

In all seriousness though, that's gutting mate, and if you can get away without having a car, you will certainly be better off - petrol and insurance are going through the roof, let alone the other costs of buying and running a car, do you really really need one?

It cost me no more when I changed mine last year.
