Here's one for the 'Old Shimano' gurus:-

Does anyone remember that they made a small-pitch (10mm) chainring / sprocket / chain system? This never actually took off but made it look like the 48T chainring was about a 32T. IIRC, this was for fixed wheel bikes only.
 
was it the one with the freewheel action in the BB rather than at the hub and vaguely remember some expanding chainwheel system to give infinitely variable gear ratios that worked automatically??? very vague memories...
