Just picked up this Dawes Galaxy Tour, extras thrown in 200 quid :-)

Dawes were a little cagey about it. They certainly kept the union flag on there.

Then they moved to tig, lugless, far Eastern. - still a great bike but not as smooth to ride as the lugged ones, and I think the later they are, the better they are.

The frame tubes, and I assume the lugs, were made in Britain, shipped over to Czech, built up then shipped back.

As soon as I have the riding position spot on for me I will take it for a long ride, it rides great, really smooth and because its had so little use all the transmission is like new too

That bike has the best setup of any galaxy, as well as the nicest frame.
The only drawback is they stuck with using drops with a long forward throw, suited to downtube or barend shifters.
STI gear levers are much nicer on a drop with short forward throw, so riding on the hoods is comfortable.
It's quite hard to find these now in 26 clamp size.

Great bike. You planning any touring

I have just moved back to Sutton Coldfield W.Mids after many years in Devon, but I started cycling in this area with the CTC and the Galaxy was the recommended touring bike by the CTC but I could never afford one, so I have zillions of places to rediscover on my Galaxy now, done one blast out to Lichfield so far (only just picked up the bike), it rides great, many more to follow no doubt

Indeed, dont like the bars, have some more on order, the shifters are brilliant

Tom, velo orange do a removable face plate stem to take a modern 31.8mm shallow drop bar. Brutally expensive but the only game in town. I use them, nice finish, stiff with a longer stem so you can get the bars up.
A really lovely bike. I wouldn't have haggled either. Sometimes you just need to stump up with the spondoolix.

Soma does a nice 26 bar with short throw and shallow drop.
Costs a few spons but keeps it all looking pukka.

(I don't like the look of 31.8 bar/ stem on a lugged bike meself, let alone a quill stem)

Well as a first step and to get the bike comfortable , I have a quil extender on order and I have a pair of flared gravel 31.8 bars that I like, so I will fit them for now and get out on the bike, I will look around for something else later so that I can keep a quil stem as that is how it was supplied and I agree looks right
