they can be hard to undo ( the top caps) due to the preload compression of the elastomer stack pushing against them.

yes, try and avoid using pliers etc, try a rag over them and then hand strength, slow and solid.

the adjuster knob on top is a bit cosmetic really, the adjusters don't do an awful lot....but yeah if you would like to replace them, they are the kind of thing guys on here sometimes have spares of.

personally, i would suggest running steel coil springs in them once you have them cleaned up, as opposed to elastpmers. steel coils are easier to manage long term, and give slightly better performance to new elastomers.

They set the preload on the springs for proper setup. So they are kind of needed, but only after you have the correct springs for your weight.

A bit of WD40 and rest them on a radiator might help loosen the caps. Reduce the load of the springs on them (if there is any) first to make it a bit easier.

Have fun and the service manual etc is in the Gallery&Archive (large button in the title menu). Also search the forum as there is a lot of info

I've got rock shox indy springs in my similar age Judy DH's which have 80mm travel, yours are likely 63mm or there was a an extension kit to 80mm available.

I have managed to get the top caps off after eating some spinach! The elastomers fell out like sand! So next question where can I get some or even springs??

Thanks guys!!!

I would without doubt go springs over them elastomers, Judy used an May stack which are different to plain customers also the springs are what they eventually ended up using a few years later.
