Judy SL 1995: Wavy washer installed ?

Hi,

here you can see a pricture of the manual "Judy 1997":

1. the wavy washer (No.24): is this washer also part of a Judy from 1995 ? I can't remember that the washer was installed at my Judy 1995. Or the previous owner forgot to install it after servicing. And is it for both sides, left and right ?

2. What part is No. 23 ? Is this a part of the original Rock Shox cartridge ?
I bought a new Risse Racing cartridge and I wand to know if this part is also necessary ?

Best regards
Christian

Yes I'm sure the wavy washer was installed in all Judy's with that type of cart, just above the circlip (Prt 21), which should be installed with the sharp edge up, IE facing out of the inner leg, but no wavy washer was on the Neutral shaft (dummy leg).

This part here is the cartridge shaft guide, it goes into the bottom of the fork leg, the wavy washer hold this firmly in place with the circlip, to keep it in place and not loose, as this can cause binding on the cartridge shaft.
The bottom of the leg has a recessed gap for this guide to fit into.
It is important to keep the sharp edge of the circlip facing out of the lower leg, as the rounded edge can alloy the circlip to pop out of its lip.

No,

If you picture the circlip, it is there to retain the shaft guide within the recess in the leg, the sharp edge faces away from the wavy washer, to ensure there is a sharp edge contact within the machined lip of the recess. If the rounded side of the circlip is against the machined lip, it has the chance to pop off under load.

You need the circlip, wavy washer, and shaft guide for any new cart you install, not sure if it is supplied with some replacement carts?

It is also worth noting that part 23 may vary in design depending on the cart, for instance the alloy bodied spare cart I have requires one with no rear step if I remember correct?

As you can see there is only place for the wavy washer and the circlip.

This is not a original Rock Shox cartridge it's a Risse GEM cartridge.

Summary of the Risse instruction manual:

Are the "old plastic washer" the black parts at your first picture ?

By the way, is the cartridge in the left or in the right stanchion ?

Hi,

The plastic parts in my pic are the shaft guides (Part 23), I am pretty sure you need these even with replacement carts.

I thought I had an original plastic washer (Part 24 wash the plastic washer in earlier forks, but P-24 became the wave waher later I think) but cannot find any, but as you can see, we have the bottom of the cart, the cart shaft, the shaft guide, the wave washer and the circlip in the correct fitting order.

The cart shaft guide pictured has no stepping on the rear, this was what I used with serviceable Judy carts (they have a circlip on top), with stepped ones for sealed carts, as they had a little recess at the bottom.

It does not really matter if you put it in the left or right, unless the bottom of the lower leg assembly has the rebound adjustment guide on it.

PS I am sure the old plastic washer may have had a diagonal split in it?

PS is there any play with your cart installed without part 23?

No, that's why I'm asking.

In my opinion there is only space for the wavy washer and circlip. So I think the plastic washer comes with the original carttidges.

I guess...
