Judy DHs . Taking them apart... ?

After all the years I have been cycling I have never had to strip any forks down, always had them serviced or sent away for someone else to do it for me, but the time has come for me have to strip a pair of judy DHs down, Due to me wanting to get the legs and brace sprayed up locally quickly, are they easy to do ?, does oil leak all over these ones have speed springs in ! , do I need any special tools, air pumps or the such like etc, are they easy to reassemble.. ?

Your help would be much appreciated.. thanks

Si

Thanks fella, Appreciate that, are there any other sites with like step by step picture guides, and also it mentions nothing about the speed springs ?

speed springs?
step1 remove top cap.
step 2 remove elastomers.
step 3 replace elastomers with springs.
step 4 replace top cap.

easy as that. 8)

Is there quantities of oil etc to take into consideration, and if so what oils are recommended ?

Thanks

as far as I know , the cartridge is a sealed unit, only taken apart if you need to put in a heavier oil (like i did).

The rest of the fork is pretty simple elastomer job.

Oil cart is a bit messy, and unless upgraded understand it is best left alone. Though if totally mashed, worth a big hammer on it

Speed springs just replace elastomers. If you undo the crown bolts slightly, the top caps will unscrew from the stanchions. Out pop springs, and you can then see how simple they really are..

Then you can unscrew the allen bolts at bottom of legs, light tap with a hammer, and damping cart/dummy shafts will pop out.

Honestly, its easier to do than describe, and nothing really to cock up  (famous last words..)

Every cartridge I've ever taken out of a Judy DH has taken less than a minute to go pop on the bench!

Right then so we are saying its just really springs and cartridges ? no oil actually in the legs ? looks like I'll have my tea and have a go... thanks fellas. I suppose if anything goes 'pop' spares are readily available ? should have had a go at servicing suspension years ago

I can see why I like rigids they are no problem to sevice
