Joining Old Shimano 6 spd chains ?

Was it safe to just join these old chains with a reused pin or were there those fancy joining pins or power-links BITD ?? Just singlespeeding an old 88' bike and was going to re-join the chain after taking a load of links out....

Just reuse the old pin (obviously ensuring that you don't push the old pin all the way out when breaking the chain!). Those chains were as strong as tractor engines and, along with cockroaches, could survive nuclear war!

Yeah cheers, will try it later.. Mate of mine here at work says he never bothers with "that fancy stuff" and he's never lost a chain...

Only chains I ever had break on me were ones with the special links like sram or ones with special pins like shimano. Well designed ones like Rohloff that don't use such stuff have never broken and I certainly never snapped a 6 speed!
