Jockey Wheels

Why on earth are they so expensive? It's not like they're complex ultra-high precision devices, just a bit of plastic and a couple of paper-thin stamped washers... surely they should cost less than 50p each?

Last time I was going to buy some, they were more than half the cost of a whole new derailleur!

The fact that they only seem to last about a fortnight these days adds insult to injury... does anybody have a source for properly-cheap replacement jockey wheels?

Local bike shop maybe?

I normally end up buying a second hand mech with reasonable jockeys on. I agree, the price is silly. I can link you to some gub ones? Virtually the same as kcnc (same factory i think) but £6 or so each.

I'm willing to consider pretty much anything cheap! Six quid is still expensive but assuming they're alloy might be worth a try... do they last any longer than the plastic ones?

Thanks for the links - I might try some of the alloy ones and see if they're any more durable. I was half-hoping that some factory in China was churning out billions of the things and selling them cheap by the pound!

I have to admit I'm mostly to blame for the short lifespan as cleaning drivetrains is not my favourite pastime (I make the most of the few moments I get spare to go out actually riding instead!) At this time of year it's impossible to keep the bike even fairly clean as it would mean cleaning it thoroughly after each and every ride which just isn't practical.

Having said all that, I'd be quite happy to accept the short lifespan of the jockey wheels and treat them as disposable if only they were a sensible price...

That's just how my bikes currently are, every now and again when the mud and grass on sticks are stopping the wheels from turning I take them of and clean them  Hose pipe once every few rides is about as good as I'm getting a the moment.
