8pm - Greg Lemond, Slaying the Badger 1986 Tour de France documentary followed by The Wild Bunch.

Re:

that was the most captivating programme i have ever seen about cycling, bar none!! i felt like i was 19 again and watching the drama unfold for the first time!! i loved the footage, much of it which i'd never seen. seeing hinault's true colours straight after the alpe d'huez stage and poor lemond's incredulous reaction . . the whole tale was absolutely spellbinding . . .

I enjoyed it but didn't get the point where after Alp Duez Greg Lemond was upset having let Hinault win Duez he was surprised Hinault said the race was still on into Paris... well of course it was sort of possible, Hinault only said the obvious , crashes can happen, things can happen, there is a chance. This is just fact. Lemond was being a bit naïve IMHO.

Re:

the point was that hinault and co promised that they would all ensure that lemond won the 1986 tour after lemond had to back off to allow hinault to win his fifth tour in 1985.

it was orchestrated by bernard tapie that the two of them would ride up alpe dhuez together, hinault in front and lemond gifting the stage to hinault, with the promise that lemond was set to win the '86 tour without challenge from his team mate.

what was agonising to watch was the young lemond sitting next to hinault while he blew his trumpet about how the tour wasn't over in spite of lemond's helping hinault over alpe dhuez that day.

a rotten thing to do but then hinault was never in the habit of gifting anything to anyone! as they said, the pundits were amazed that hinault didn't enter politics after his cycling career ended!! a right bastard but utterly admirable on the bike and still my cycling hero to date.
