Is this Trek past it?

It's just corrosion under the paint.

The best course of action would be to strip off the paint and, as Mark says, polish it or get it repainted/powdercoated.

Aluminium alloy frames do get white powdery corrosion forming, especially if it's caused by exposure to salt. As long as the corrosion isn't too deep and there isn't a lot of pitting, then the tube strength and structure shouldn't be compromised.

Might change my mind now as this frame seems only to need a repaint. The steel frame I have is from a mid-90s Giant Boulder. I think I'll accumulate the necessary components second-hand and do it that way. Thanks for the replies folks.

only cosmetic, nothing to worry about unless you really want it to look nice!

have run several Alu frames bare over the years after paint fell off in large chunks, or in one case I got it stripped and then rebuilt it and rode for 6 months cos I couldn't afford the re-paint  no harm came of it.

Trek were past it when they lumbered themselves with Klein

Great company ruined by a needless acquisition of a boutique brand past its sell by date.

It's only a bit of bubbly paint!

Calm down Mr Grumpypants, bit harsh on both Trek and Klein I think, and not really helpful to OPs paint query, or could you not resist a bit of Klein bashing :D

Don't worry. I got my answer. The Trek can once again ride with a new coat of paint and I can make up a bike from the Giant Boulder frame. I'm away to get some popcorn now to see how this develops. :-)

Sorry.....

I like Treks but fail to see why they needed to go shopping.

glad this one lives to fight another day

you're passionate, thats what counts ;-)

I'm always torn on the whole Trek buying other brands thing, I'm disappointed that Klein, Gary Fisher, Lemond and Bontrager basically lost their sparkle and died a slow death under them (Bonty as a parts brand being a tiny saving grace!), but who's to say what would have happened to them if they hadn't, would they have died anyway unable to compete? or would they still be going today... who knows!
