Re-traced my steps and picked up the offending item!

Was quite lucky as it could well have caused a serious injury. The noise sounded like a gunshot, fortunately I wasn't too far from home.

Inner tube beyond saving too I reckon Tyre actually looks ok somehow, can't see any actual damage to the sidewalls - good old Schwalbe

Saw a guy get speared in the calf by a piece coming off his rear rim like that.

Makes me very nervous when rims get near to that point!

yeah, I heard that can happen, the rim will give advance warning as you should be able to see the tyre push it out.

another reason why disc brakes are better.

I think the rim was a fair way off actually failing on its own in his case. It was just the high speed descent and multiple rim strikes that pushed it over the edge. Or pushed the edge over.........

And most of the ones i've seen go have been in the workshop, as you pump the tyre up from the 10 psi that the customer thinks is reasonable for commuting to work.
