is the current Deore stuff equivalent to Deore LX?

I had a full deore disc groupset on a modern bike a few years back. Could not fault it. Todays Deore is the XTR of 15 years ago IMO.

I'd completely agree with this. Deore is not fancy in any shape or form but the gap between the low end and the high end in functional terms is far, far, far closer than it was ten years ago.

I'd be more than happy running a Deore drivetrain and brakes (disc or v). The only bit I'd avoid would shifters and V brake levers as these are a bit cheap feeling and LX isn't much more expensive but feels more like XT.

Deore is the bottom of the range (well apart from them other bits you find on halfords and Argos bikes like Alivio)

I rode a Kona Shred with Alivio recently and it shifted sweet, miles better than old cheap gears. Deore is good kit... functional and good value,what more could anyone ask?

absolutely, good kit, reasonable weight etc. However, I see a lot of transmission wear on the Deore equipped bikes I look after. Chainrings and stuff don't last long, but at least they're cheap. . .
