Is something like this in your garage?

I remember this bike; or if it not the same bike, the coincidence is remarkable. A bike used by Indurain was offered in an auction local to me a number of years ago; the auction house is better known for selling toys; they clearly didn't really know much about bikes, as I spoke to them about this bike. The aspect that indicates it is the same bike is that in both occasions, the bike was won in a raffle at the time. Here is a link to a local press article about it:

The thing that stood out for me was the saddle height, indicating that it had clearly been ridden since Indurain had it. As you can see by the estimate, they were looking for very good money for it; if memory serves, it had a reserve of around £13k, but it failed to reach this amount.

The problem of course with these sorts of bikes, is that this is one of a number of bikes used by Indurain during the Tour de France. He will have had a TT bike, a light bike for the mountains, spare road bike, etc, the one up for auction might not have even been ridden in the Tour, who knows?

Anyway, last week, a scam auction took place for a Lotus 110; the price reached is of course ludicrous, apparently the bids were fake. I believe they were placed for some sort of insurance scam; so it will be something along the lines of someone claiming their Lotus was stolen, so the price realised in some way shows the value of these bikes.

Re:

If it's the Lotus bike / story I'm thinking of,

The pictures were recognised by the the person who had previously sold the bike, and the person who bought it had restored it. The bidding was to prevent someone being defrauded by the seller, e.g. paying and not receiving the goods.

The last real one I saw for sale was around £12k in restored condition
