Is old better than new

Old&slow

Dirt Disciple
Hi everyone

My second question for today,

I've finally dug out my trusty Diamond Back ascent out of the garage.

If my fading memory serves me correct, I think I purchased her in the early to mid 90's, bright orange if that helps.(I'd guess not)

Over the next few weeks/months/years, I'm going to have a go at rebuilding her and hopefully after a little fettle I'll be able to ride her once again, however , I have a slight problem that over the dark distant years that have now passed her by, the majority of the original parts have been plundered and donated to friends (Tut!! ) and as its been stuffed in the rafters for at least 15 years , I suppose I may as well give up hope that the parts will come home and be reunited with one with the frame, so this leads me to the question ,

Do I buy new old parts or should I replace with new ones , as I cannot for the life of me find any 7 speed parts, let alone tan walled specialized tyres, I've had a look on a bike site called wiggle and evans, and I even went into the guy's at halford's, but they looked at me as if I was speaking klingon or talking in Pascal or something, when I told them that the frame was bought in the 90's one of them walked off and started tidying the shelves , whilst the other pretended to be on the phone.

So much for customer support eh!!! whats your suggestions or is there a general rule of rebuilding (cough) classic mountain bikes up.

Steve

Beat me typing there FFTC  :
Check out the for-sale forum plenty of parts there for reasonable prices. As for tyres you can get repro - Panaracer smoke and dart's and if you live somewhere dry the Charge Splashback will look period. You can fit second hand shifters, cranks, dérailleurs, etc and fit NOS cassettes and chainrings for a practical build that doesn't break the bank and still shows the heritage of the bike . SJS Cyces stock a large range of old stock also.

Ollie :) .

Re:

If you are bothered about the bike looking "retro" or "period correct" then you can pick up most parts on here and eBay for not much money. Unfortunately a lot of retro tyres are now quite expensive, so I see nothing wrong with using modern tyres.

If you just want a bike to ride then more modern components can make good sense, just be careful about mixing and march by old and new as some parts don't like to work with other parts.

Re:

Thanks for your replies firedfromthecircus and ollie

FFTC ;) thanks for all the information , and the pasted link , I'd like to get some 'tan' walled tyres if at all possible, as those coloured tyres was what was originally fitted when I purchased the bike, and I thought looked great , not so sure on how the black would work colourwise, although saying that the Panaracer Smoke tyres at £ 37.00 a pop is seriously affecting the beer tokens
Once I've cleaned her up a little , I'll try and work out how to post a photo up of the Diamond Back for you to have a chuckle at ;)

Ollie , thank you also for the information , but forgive me for my rudeness but what does NOS mean. ?

Needing a drink Steve.

loads of 7spd cassettes on ebay, and tyres, just use new, they roll nicely. 8spd chain will work with 7spd cassettes as they are the same.

This one comes with a chain too

As long as your shifters and mechs are ok, just about anything else is still available. Certain new bikes still come with cantilevers. gears still shift with cables and oily chains/ cassettes havent gone away.

And these wont break the bank:

and a Wiggle 7spd cassette

Re:

Thanks jimo746 and legrandefromage.

legrandefromage - looks like a few more options for me their then , thank you , I maybe have a slight advantage/disadvantage then, as I don't have any of the original shifter units nor the mechs as these were 'ahem' borrowed some years ago :(

Jimo746 - I'd like to try and retain the older look to the bike for sure, and alas after looking at the modern available mechs and stuff, they all seem to be made of cheese or soft chocolate , and have more gears than my granny would need , where has all the metal gone

I should have thought about ebay for parts, as I use t'bay for odd bits n bobs, in fact that reminds me I'm due a road frame delivery , now theirs a can of worms.

Getting drunker and financially raped by the minute Steve

Re:
