Is my Apple tree dying?

I'll give the soap idea a go, thanks! I'll also take a couple of cuttings.

On Saturday I washed the trunk is soapy water and sprayed the canopy as much as I could and the fungus seems to have gone hard now which I guess is good. I hope the bark grows back though :?
