SACD as Sony's attempt at generating some license revenue as the patents for CD ran out so anyone could make a CD player.
SACD was a dead end as the DVD format had much higher resolution and more channels.
Sony are reasonably happy again as they are sitting on the Blu-Ray license.
most physical formats have a limited lifespan as the majority move entirely into HDD/ solid state based.
vinyl and compact cassette are still around, cd has a while to go but is on short notice.
iPods are great and are as important as the original Sony Walkman. They can be plugged into just about any amplifier ever made bringing an old technology bang up to date.
