iPod or iRiver?

Archos have some nice media players in various sizes.

I've been looking at the Archos 7 myself.

I wouldn't touch an iPod/Phone with a very long barge pole. Apart from the fact that you have to use iTunes they have no ability to expand the storage capacity and have limited compatibility with various music types

ipods are probably the worst mp3 players on the market. they have a shocking user interface, a parent company who coverup their own cock ups with threats of lawsuits against paying customers, their products aren't any better than anyone elses, they just have a very good marketing team and they gave away 100's to celebs, journalists and people who had a lot of media attention to get those shocking white headphones pictured everywhere.

I currently use a zune and i have to say i really like it. mp3, photo, video, radio & half decent mobile phone style games, 80gig storage, about the size of a classic ipod & decent battery life. its two failings are that its software is fairly resource hungry on your computer & the headphones that come with it aren't the most comfortable (but i use my old bose ones anyway) finding one over here is the tricky bit - most electrical stores haven't even heard of them let alone stock them so ordering from overseas is pretty much the only option.

if / when the zune dies I will probably replace it with an iriver or a sony unit.

I'm thinking of an iphone as my current phone is about 5 years old  and I'd like to be able to reference a few pdf manuals for work and being able to look at things like sheldon browns site would be useful . Haven't seen if it'll just read a pdf file or not yet and using linux might be a stumbling block . There is a windows pc in the house but it would be nice to still not have to use it .

There is a linux programme that converts music to be compatible for ipod. Can't remember what it was but i used it on my old laptop. Rip

Had an ipod classic for about 5 years and it's been great. Is used daily in the car and on the move so no complaints from me and I'd defo have another when mine finally packs up. Itunes can be a pain but I prefer it to media player.

Also have a Blackberry. Using a usb you can port playlists etc straight from itunes to the phone. :D

I'm still running a 1st gen iPod Touch 32GB, will be upgrading when/if they bring out a 128GB version..... it's my baby, without it I would have any portable access to subtitled music performances. Never had any problems with it either for that matter. I use it with a pair of Technics RP-DH1200 DJ headphones which fit over my cochlear implant parts perfectly :)

i use a sony nwa1000 in black..its a nicely sized little lump of black glossyness...battery life is great if your not always pressing the skip button..
