Ionisers ?

At one time the use of portable air ionisers was all the rage, but what was it with them, why were they all the rage ?

I have tried to research the theory on them and keep coming up with conflicting reports ranging from techno babble to clearly pseudo science, but I am researching because I have a few of these things, one stuffed into a usb port on my computer and the other a hefty twin speed fan assisted thing in one very dusty corner, where it seems the ioniser attracts all the dust to, which is good, because there is virtually no dust anywhere else.

I got them years ago as I had heard they help with poor sleep, which yeah, the sleep has got better, that is when I can turn the mind off to sleep and the fact by them attracting dust, they remove harmful airborn dusts out of the air and yeah the bits of black sulphur from internal combustion exhaust. I have found but what I do find I like about the things is what they do to the air in my place, something I can only describe as like the air near fast running water, and if anyone has been to St Nectan's Glen in Cornwall, yeah like that, very much so, the stream of air that comes out of the source of the glen.

I will not be getting rid of my ionisers as I like what they do, it is just I want understand more about them.

Does anyone else still use ionisers ?

Or is it pseudo science ?

We got one to see if it would help with our daughter's hayfever at night. Its such a small thing I can't see how it would cycle enough air to make a difference. It probably doesn't do any harm though and even if it offers only a little in the way of placebo cure, why not.

That monster ioniser I have would be definitely be useful single speed most of the time, but I have twice the speed which I don't use, but I understand the ionisers changes the polarity of air particles so they fall to the ground and having been a sufferer of hayfever from age four right through to thirty seven, I wished I had discovered ionisers sooner, even plugged one into the car as driving with hay fever is not fun, one constantly taking one's eyes off the road through sneezing, either that or say goodbye to your eyeballs as they bounce off or splat on the wind screen.

Ionisers also help with the headache situation one gets working with VDU's a lot, and why I have one almost permanently in a usb port.

But the air is wonderful around them.
