install a headset?

plastic water pipe from B&Q! cut to length, fits over the steerer and sits on the race, then bang away. If you hit too hard then you break the pipe, not the race!

Like the man said, spend about £36 and have the right tool for the job !

I've got a headset press and its one of the best bits of kit I've ever owned, especially as many bikes pass through my paws due to this retro bug and often they need a headset upgrade

Stick the headset cups in the freezer too and lubricate.

I have done that way too, just use a rubber mallet and block of wood, just take care and you will be ok.

On a steel frame I usually resort to mallet and piece of wood and I think you would have to be pretty unlucky to do any damage

On an aluminium frame I dig out the threaded bar and washers as I have seen a Kona Kula headtube split with the mallet method :? I didn't like the bloke whose frame it was so I did have a secret giggle
