install a headset?

I have helped a mate just bang the cups in with very basic tools (lump of wood and rubber mallet), and its done the job, but I always take mine to my LBS to have done properly with the special tools...should only cost £12ish and saves knackering a decent headset.
I'm sure others with have their own ways.

i use a bench vice with wood on either end and slowly press it in evenly
never had a problem doing it this way and saves hammering it it.

I've got a long piece of threaded rod (£1.49 from B&Q), with a piece of wood....bit like this....

To fit the crown race I use an old Klein hairset bearing, I put it on the crown race and gently tap it with a rubber mallet, using a screwdriver. It sounds like a sure way to index the crown race but it has always worked (and I substitute the crown race quite often because I frequently change from rigid to suspension forks).
However, sliding a tube of the same size of the crown race on the steerer and use it to tap the crown race itself is probably safer.

i remember using a hammer and a block of wood to put the headset races in my new sannie(paid 1200 quid for the frame) bak in the mid 90s,s..most nerve wracking 5 min of my life.....just dont trust anyone else to do it..... :?
