Inline cable adjuster position query

I recently installed a 9 speed Sun Race thumbshifter to run with an M772 XT Shadow rear mech.Neither the mech or the shifter have adjustment barrels and although I have it working well I`d like the option of an inline barrel adjuster to fine tune indexing.Can I install it directly at the shifter(where they traditionally go)or do I have to split the outer cable?

I read somewhere that the Sun Race thumbies can have Jagwire ones fitted at the shifter which is nice and tidy looking.A bit of digging and I have found a pic of it,so thats the problem solved.
