Haven't been on there for ages but there's a bit about this on ifrider.com :

The Independent Fabrication staff have released this information to help you learn a bit more about your IF. Each IF has a unique frame number on the underside of the bottom bracket shell, but what does it mean? Well here’s an example serial number.
123D317C
123 = 123rd frame for that year
D = steel deluxe frame
3 = made in 2003
17C = 17 inch frame with custom geometry.
The other models are identified by the following codes:
C = Crown Jewel
X = Planet Cross
D= Deluxe
R = Club Racer
I = Independence
T = Titanium Frame (Deluxe, Planet X and Crown Jewel)
XS = The XS
BS = Beatstick
L = Factory Lightweight
SS = Stainless Steel Frame (SSR, SSX)

Before 1998, (Fat City Cycles workers abounded), the serial numbers were not all that uniform.
From about 1998 and on till now; it goes a bit like this:
For IFs made after 1998 or so, there is a standard way to read the serial number. The first three digits indicate which bike it was that year. The letters indicate the model. The next two numbers represent the ST size, and the final number is the year. So…
352D150, for example, would be a 15” Deluxe made in 2000, and the 352nd bike made that year.
That's from an email directly from an IF worker, so should be accurate.

Getting excited counting the days til I get mine...not so excited by the probable duty bill 
but I reckon its near Christmas, its marked as a gift, and all those lovely people in Customs will just pass it threw with seasonal cheer
