Inch and a quarter is a pain in the ass

In a bit of a quandry and need your opinions :?

The Gary Fisher is almost up and running but as you all know his early bikes had 1 1/4 inch headsets.

Got a 1 1/4 chris king non-threaded and a ringle stem as well as finding some quadra's so it was all coming together rather well. However the star fangled nut was done for so now on the hunt for a 1 and 1/4 one which is proving difficult  .

The forks also have a noticable bit of telescopic play- which I'm sure will start to bug me. In an ideal world I would like some rigid forks but they don't come up that often and when they do they are usually threaded and too short  .

I'm thinking of making life simpler by getting a headset reducer, getting rid of the chris king headset, forks and ringle stem and then I can get a nice set of p2's forks and join the rest of the world in 1 inch 1/8th land. Are these reducers any use? Can't afford the chris King develution so will have to be a cheaper option and finally will I get any money back by selling the ringle stem, forks and CK headset given the awkward size?

Well question is, would you keep with the 1 and 1/4 biuld or convert it to 1 and 1/8th :?:

Any thoughts would be most welcome.

I had this decision to make with the funk,it was a pain to get good 1 1/4" parts, tbh if you can get the spacers it will open all manner of possibilities for parts,so much stuff is available in 1 1/8" now,and getting the larger size CK spares is nigh on impossible.

Plus if you do change sell me your larger stuff :P lol

Can poss get 1 1/4 sfn if you need one! Cane creek inc top cap think about £5 will check stock on monday

rc you would save my bacon, give me a shout if you come up with a sfn :D

Would I still be able to use the Chris King top cap?

Mountainbike-kult.de has some 1-1/4" ahead rigid forks at the moment. Nice and chunky looking. But your right, someone else was recently looking for ahead stuff and it looked nigh on impossible. 1-1/4" threaded seems to be a bit easier.

Look under gabel. And you can pm him from here too.

BTW you can get round the lack of a SFN, as you can preload the headset in other ways and once the stem is tight its really just for decoration. You could even knock up something to hold the king cap in place.

Yes, can't you just rig up something like the Headlock system to preload the headset without the need for a 1.25 SFN? See here for ones by Azonic, USE etc. Long bolt; 2 washers. Job done.

I use a headset reducer on my cannondale with no problems.
They are a very snug fit but was a better option than the headshok fork...
